Abstract
In this study, titanium specimens with various surface conditions were fabricated using microarc oxidation (MAO) and hydrothermal (HT) treatment techniques and the effects of titanium surface characteristics on the release characteristics of bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorbed on the surface were investigated. The MAO treated group (MAO), the MAO and HT treated groups using alkaline solution (MAO-HT), P-ion containing alkaline solution (MAO-HT-P), and Ca-ion containing alkaline solution (MAO-HT-Ca) were prepared. MAO treated specimens showed the smooth porous surface. However, hydrothermally treated specimens had newly formed nano-structures on porous surface, and their surface characteristics were changed by the chemical compositions of hydrothermal solutions. MAO and HT treated specimens had much
lower contact angle that is to have high hydrophilicity compared with MAO group. As a result of evaluating releasing characteristics and the final release quantities of BSA from MAO, MAO-HT, MAO-HT-P, and MAO-HT-Ca groups after immersing in BSA solution, MAO specimens had the highest value, and MAO-HT, MAO-HT-Ca showed similar values next, and MAO-HT-P specimens showed the lowest final release quantity. BSAs were released rapidly within 24 hours for MAO-HT-P and MAO-HT-Ca groups. However, MAO group showed a slower release characteristics of BSA compared with other groups.
